Abstract Mixed Media Paintings

Judy began using mixed media while working on the vibrant abstract series of paintings to ‘push the envelope’ and explore the possibilities mixed media brings.

Judy creates her abstract paintings in a frenzied manner known as gestural abstraction, which is both emotionally and physically draining.  Searching for a contrast, she decided to explore mixed media, which calls for accurate decisions and technique. She has also learned that working on two different series at the same time keeps her work fresh.

Showcasing an incredible sense of balance and style, the seamless Mixed Media series exemplifies her wonderful sensitivity to various media and the Judy’s commitment to growth and challenge.

Working with mixed media has helped me expand my palette. These paintings can be both fun and frustrating, as I try to make all the different elements work together in the same piece.”

And the elements couldn’t be more different. Canvas pieces, charcoal, oil paints and sticks, burnt encaustic, cut up old paintings, paper and canvas prints, watercolor, newspaper, pictures… and freedom.

Judy has successfully created exciting and quiet journeys reaching far beyond the confines of two-dimensional canvas with her mixed media abstract art. The colors are both bright and subtle and content is without limit.

Using combined mediums adds to texture and expression in all paintings. It is important to ‘push the envelope’ by trying new mediums and by adding them to other mediums.”

Judy - Love, love, love your work and what you have to say about your creative process. I find myself shaking my head up and down saying "yep, yep, yep" about what you do and how you do it. Just wanted to say that and yep, yep, yep, thanks. -Susan LaMantia
